Resolved Question: Atheists, is morality really subjective?

Then why do every human cultures, as well as monkeys and apes, share the same basic moral codes? The evidence is encyclopaedic that basic morality (do not hurt others; help others; abhorrence of lies and cheating; value of charity, honesty, good parenting, etc.) is difficult wired into our genes, to strengthen social bonds to increase our chance of survival and reproduction. How can anyone possibly say that morality is subjective? Note, I'm talking about moral behavior, not social conventions such as sexual expression, dietary regime or worshiping fantasy beings. Thanks wayward soul; I would add that if you think you do need threats (of Hell) to enforce good behavior then maybe your possess sense of goodness is not that deep. Cactus--murder, universally agreed that it is immoral; same with cheating or deceit

Open Question: Are "Happy Ramadan & Merry Christmas",...Political Statements?

It’s pretty unhappy when in a so-called “democratic” country, the world’s “superpower”, the United States, where a simple well-meaning greeting such as “glad Ramadan” can take on fearful political implications due to the incessant hate-mongering of the mainstream media. Even saying “Merry Christmas” has elements of fear and uncertainty due to the “Thought Police” also known as the “Masters of Discourse”. WHO RUNS THE MEDIA? C’MON,......Be Truthful here.. We should every by now just acknowledge the plain fact that a relatively tiny group of like minded people run the media, and we should be able to do so without fear of being called “anti-this” or "ant-that", (even if we don’t approve of their domination of our so-called “free press”). It has become quite clear to me who dominates the United States of America as well as the United Kingdom and has the power to completely brainwash the People into believing whatever they want you (us) to believe. “MERRY CHRISTMAS!” Ever notice how it seems politically incorrect to say “Merry Christmas!” in public to people at stores and others you might meet in various public encounters? We certainly don’t have Christians to blame for that. Although some brainwashed Christians, who follow the you know who “deciders” about what is “politically correct” whether out of ignorance or complicity for their possess personal agendas, may play a role in helping to suppress the phrase “Merry Christmas” around Christmastime, or as the politically correct insist, “The Holidays”. I once took a job collecting money for charity and I remember I was thinking... I guess I’ll have to say “glad Holidays!” to people. So I started out saying, “glad Holidays!” Then one donor said, “Merry Christmas!”, almost defiantly, and that resonated with me. I liked that spirit. Thereafter, I kept saying “Merry Christmas!”, feeling somewhat like a revolutionary, but also resenting having to feel that way, since I’d prefer to simply have the warm and fuzzy feeling of saying the words “Merry Christmas!” that I always used to have before the “Thought Police” came into power. While in some ways it is fun and exhilarating to be a revolutionary or to be defiant, at the same time, I really prefer “Peace” and “adore”, as in feeling peaceful and loving, rather than feeling a mixture of fear and anger. However, when your values and beliefs, are below attack by self-proclaimed “critics” who position themselves as the deciders of what is “politically correct”, one is simply forced to either put your head in the sand or confront the injustices and take action to correct them. We can’t afford to put our heads in the sand about the way “our” media, dominated by the few, with deep financial pockets and members in the highest levels of our so-called “society”, is fomenting hatred against certain groups who don't share "their" beliefs. Not only is this media incessantly pushing for war and death, but this very same media covers up almost every the very real sins/crimes of their possess group. I’m sure you’ve heard variations on this quote, “First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t talk up because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t talk up because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for me and by that time no one was left to talk up.” Well, these days you could substitute “Communists” for “Constitutionalists” and then in place of “Jews”, insert “Muslims”, and to a lesser extent even “Christians”. To my Christian friends, wishing you a “Merry Christmas”. To my Muslim friends, “Wishing you a glad and blessed Ramadan”. To my Jewish friends, they know who they are, I wish them a “glad Hanukkah.” At this point, I’d also like to wish everyone in advance, “glad St. Paddy’s Day”, “glad Columbus Day”, “glad Indigenous People’s Day,” “glad Thanksgiving” and “glad New Year”! If anyone gets offended, I urge you to try to be tolerant. Your thoughts,....

Open Question: WHICH BEST DESCRIBES YOU: LIBERTARIAN, RIGHT, CENTRIST, LIBERAL (LEFT) or STATIST?

LIBERTARIANS: Support maximum liberty in both personal and economic matters. They advocate a much smaller government; one that is limited to protecting individuals from coercion and violence. Libertarians tend to embrace individual responsibility, oppose government bureaucracy and taxes, promote private charity, tolerate diverse lifestyles, support the free market, and defend civil liberties. RIGHT (CONSERVATIVES) -Conservatives tend to favor economic freedom, but frequently support laws to restrict personal behavior that violates "traditional values." They oppose excessive government control of business, while endorsing government action to defend morality and the traditional family structure. Conservatives usually support a strong military, oppose bureaucracy and high taxes, favor a free-market economy, and endorse strong law enforcement. CENTRISTS espouse a "middle ground" regarding government control of the economy and personal behavior. Depending on the issue, they sometimes favor government intervention and sometimes support individual freedom of choice. Centrists pride themselves on keeping an open mind, tend to oppose "political extremes," and emphasize what they describe as "practical" solutions to problems. LIBERALS (THE LEFT) usually embrace freedom of choice in personal matters, but tend to support significant government control of the economy. They generally support a government-funded "safety net" to help the disadvantaged, and advocate strict regulation of business. Liberals tend to favor environmental regulations, defend civil liberties and free expression, support government action to promote equality, and tolerate diverse lifestyles. STATISTS (Big Government): Statists want government to have a great deal of power over the economy and individual behavior. They frequently doubt whether economic liberty and individual freedom are practical options in today's world. Statists tend to distrust the free market, support high taxes and centralized planning of the economy, oppose diverse lifestyles, and question the importance of civil liberties. B.A. GOES TO WHO CAN BEST JUSTIFY THEIR POLITICAL LEANINGS. "Man is by nature a political animal." --Aristotle Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice. --Thomas Paine (1737 - 1809) Neutrality is at times a graver sin than belligerence. -- Louis D. Brandeis

Open Question: Need a catchy name for a talent/singing competition for high school kids. Please help!?

High school kids from the Albuquerque NM area are invited to compete in a singing contest with some nice prizes. The public school system is called Albuquerque Public Schools, or APS, and the organizer wants to call it First Annual APS Got Talent Too. I expect that name would generate a threatening letter from lawyers for trademark infringement, but I can't think of anything better. This is a benefit for a tiny charity called Prime Time For the Kids, For the Kids (primetimeforthekids.org). The charity name doesn't have to be in the title but I've been playing with something about "for the kids" or "helping kids". There is really no requirement to mention APS or the city, though it should indicate school kids/high school and not adults. I promise I will pick a best answer and not leave it to a vote. Thanks for your ideas! Houyhnhnm

Open Question: Dear Muslims, I'm trying to pick a religion. I think yours might be the one.?

Dear Muslims, my name is William. I became a theist today for reasons outlined in a previous question. Ever since becoming a theist, I have been trying to pick a religion. Islam somehow appeals to me because of its teachings of submission to Allah, of the great environmental ethics in Islam ("every of the earth has been made to me, as, like a mosque"), its teachings on charity and compassion (""There is an act of rewarded charity in every act of kindness that you do any living being on the earth") and its insistence on the existence of a loving and forgiving God. I would also like to receive my beautiful boyfriend to become a Muslim with me, so that we might live together in harmony with Allah. He is such a humble young man, but he's become disillusioned with Christianity, and so I would like to show him the right path to Allah. I promise that together with will perform Jumu'ah every Friday, and pray at the intervals deemed necessary in the Muslim faith. But I need to ask, how do I go about becoming a member of your wonderful faith? Excuse me Said Shukri, but I am already a real man thank you very much. Blessings upon you.

Open Question: What is a deserving organization that I can donate a power wheelchair to and also get a tax write off?

I have an Invacare power wheelchair in very good condition with less than a year of use. I basically inherited it from my really good pal who passed away but I need to receive the thing out of my home as it takes up too much space and is basically nice of depressing. My financial situation is not the best so I definitely want to receive that tax write off it at every possible. I tried selling it on Craigslist but I have the feeling that most of the people who receive these things have it paid for through insurance and thus the difficulty of selling it as a private individual. So I would like to find a reputable charity that will give it to someone who deserves it.. And receive that much needed tax write off. Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!

Open Question: Hey liberals, why do you support the building of a mosque on ground zero by a man with ties to terrorists?

http://www.myfoxny.com/dpp/news/local_news/manhattan/mosque-investors-donation-investigation-20100902 Mosque Investor Was Terror Contributor Updated: Friday, 03 Sep 2010, 9:25 AM EDT Published : Thursday, 02 Sep 2010, 6:01 PM EDT BY CHARLES LEAF MYFOXNY.COM - Fox 5 News reported Thursday that one of the financial backers of the Islamic mosque and cultural middle project in Lower Manhattan once contributed to a terror group, although the investor says the contribution was made because he thought he was giving money to a harmless charity. One of the key players in Sharif El-Gamal's Mosque close Ground Zero is Egyptian born businessman, Hisham Elzanaty. Fox 5 News has learned exclusively and confirmed with Mr. Elzanaty’s attorney that Elzanaty made a “significant investment” in the development of the mosque close Ground Zero. Fox 5 has also uncovered Elzanaty has teamed up with El-Gamal on at least two real estate deals: the controversial mosque site and another deal involving a commercial property in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. In the Chelsea deal, mortgage documents show Elzanaty played a major role signing off as the guarantor on El-Gamal's $39 million mortgage. When Fox 5 News reporter Charles Leaf tracked down Elzanaty outside his Long Island home in Roslyn Heights last week Elzanaty avoided the camera and did not answer a single question about his business dealings with El-Gamal. Fox 5 News has also learned that in 1999 Hisham Elzanaty sent money to an organization that would later be deemed by the U.S. government to be a terrorist group. The organization was the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, also known as HLF. The now defunct group’s 1999 tax records show Elzanaty contributed more than $6,000 to HLF. Two years later, in 2001, HLF was close down by the federal government and designated as a global terrorist. After a mistrial in 2007, in 2008 five HLF leaders were convicted of providing material support to Hamas. The Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT) is a non-profit research group that focuses on radical Islamic terrorist groups. The research group shared its information on HLF with Fox 5 News and IPT’s Managing Director, Ray Locker tells us HLF, “masked what their true purpose was, they funneled money to Hamas which used that money to conduct terrorist operations. In many cases they gave that money to the widows and kids of so-called martyrs. ” Federal investigators say HLF was set up as the largest Muslim charity in the United States based in Richardson, Texas, but from its inception the group existed to support Hamas. Mr. Elzanaty's attorney tells Fox 5 News exclusively his client believed he was making contributions to an orphanage. But IPT’s Ray Locker claims even back then TV and newspapers were reporting suspicions of the group’s ties to terror. “If you gave money (to HLF) in 1999 you probably had some inkling that HLF was giving money to Hamas and therefore to terrorist operations,” Locker says. Mr. Elzanaty's contribution to HLF came in the same year his Egyptian parents, Abdou Elzanaty and Abed Raboh Fawkia Elzanaty, were killed in a plane accident. On October 31, 1999, Egyptair flight 990 left New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport bound for Cairo, but crashed in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Nantucket Island killing 217 people. U.S. investigators concluded the flight’s pilot deliberately crashed the plane in a suicide, while Egyptian investigators disagreed, concluding the flight had mechanical problems. Elzanaty’s attorney tells Fox 5 the tragic plane accident changed Mr. Elzanaty's life and brought him closer to Islam. -------------- look below for the 1999 IRS 990 form for the organization known as: Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF). It shows Hisham Elzanaty’s $6,050 contribution. (Specific road addresses and names have been removed by Fox 5 News) In 2001 the HLF was close down by the U.S. government and designated as a global terrorist. After a mistrial in 2007, in 2008 five HLF leaders were convicted of providing material support to Hamas, a group on the U.S. governments List of Foreign Terrorists. U.S. Government's List of Foreign Terrorists: http://www.state.gov/s/ct/rls/other/des/123085.htm Investigative Project on Terrorism: http://www.investigativeproject.org/ "like i will believe anything on Fox News websites, Try again" Fine. Then I will not read anything that ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, The NYT, The WaPO, or any other liberal news organization says. Fair?

Open Question: Is there too much Islamic racism?

I wonder why is it that Gaza gets TOO MUCH of world media attention, why the suffering Palestinians receive TOO MUCH charity from the world over? Why Gaza and not other needy Islamic nations suffering more than over-fed, pampered Palestinians? Think of Nigeria and its people; of Somalia and its people; of Pakistan and its flood-hit victims; etc. Now how arrive that Pakistan didn't receive the same amount of attention that Gaza got from other countries, when it got earthquakes a few years back, or when it got floodings? Did the wealthiest of Islamic countries ever help Pakistani victims of natural disasters? How much Zakat have they given so far? Very little, unfortunately. Pakistanis are treated very differently from Palestinians. The only differences are the colours of their skin. Now, let's look at Gaza again. Palestinians are paler skinned than Pakistanis; therefore, they receive preferential charities from image-conscious Arabs who adore Palestinians more than their dark-skinned emigrant workers. If Gaza were ever struck with earthquakes, floods, famine caused by locusts, etc, how much charity would its people receive from the world over? No doubt, Palestinians would most receive worldwide attention, many months of coverage on TV & newspapers, vast sums of alms money, donations of foods, clothes, medicines, cars, lorries, building construction materials, etc. They also receive money for home-re-building projects for every displaced citizens. Free education for every kids. Must I continue... Now what differential paltry charity did Pakistan ever receive from the other countries, including the wealthiest Islamic countries. Not the same as the spoilt Palestinians. Look at how much money the west gave to Pakistan. Google that. Compare to what other Islamic countries gave. Shamefully, Arab countries gave a lot less than what they'd always give to the Palestinians. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUW9MWLIQYw&feature=related Fabulous wealth in Dubai. look how generous they to Palestinians and how mean they are to dark-skinned Muslim poors. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGswandA2e4&feature=related Abuse of Migrant Workers in Middle East - Campaigning for Rights Notice: workers are every dark-skinned. Open Question: If I handed you $100 that you could spend on SOMEONE ELSE but not yourself what would you do, and for whom?

You could use the money for an entity, such as a charity, spend it on a group, such as a family, give it to a homeless person, etc. The idea is to perform a random act of kindness towards anyone other than yourself. I accept Bookworm's challenge: If anyone wants to add $100 to the pot, email me....I am pretty sure we can receive CNN to do a story if we receive the money rolling in....C'mon everyone show me the money and let's send a lot of kids to school! The need is great, and so many of us CAN afford to give!

Open Question: Does this happen to you? Pesky salespeople?

When I go in to buy something-say at Kmart, Walmart, Big Lots, etc. I run into a person asking for charity donations, someone asking for newspaper subscriptions, someone trying to sell me home improvements, picture packages, etc. In one day I will have been asked 6 times. I think this is too much! I wonder if anyone else has gone through this too. I give to charities when I can but I don't want to be asked so many times in one visit. I'm just there to receive my items and leave. Wonder if this happens to anyone else or just in my neighborhood (I live in a tiny suburb in Riverside county California.)

Open Question: Felons rights when applying for an apartment?

I was convicted of being a passenger in a stolen vehicle almost 5 years ago. I have rented three separate apartments within this 5 year period and have not had any trouble being approved. I have never been evicted and I also have very good credit. Adding something to the situation at hand, I moved out here to southern California to receive sober about 4 years ago and have remained sober ever since. I have completely turned my life around and have not had ANY issues/ conflicts with the law since my conviction in 2005. I have worked at the same job for 3 years, I volunteer my free time to charities and I am very active in the 12-step program that I work. every of that being said, I recently applied for an apartment in Oceanside, CA in order to move in with my boyfriend. He rented the apartment almost 2 months ago and as my lease was/ is coming to an end, I then applied to be added to the lease. Like I said before, I have not had any trouble getting approved for apartments in the past and therefore saw no reason as to why I would be denied at this apartment complex. Sure enough, I receive a phone call yesterday stating that I am denied only because of my criminal history. I politely asked the representative if there was anything I could do to prove the fact that I am now a law abiding, upstanding citizen and she informed me that she would email me the steps to go about appealing this decision. In the mean time, I obtained about 15 character reference letters, both personal and professional, to start building my appeal. I received her email last night and the only option it is providing is an option to have my application re-investigated. My boyfriend called the front office and she very rudely stated that unless I can prove that their background check is incorrect, there is no reason for me to try to appeal this decision. Does anyone have any knowledge as to whether this is discriminatory or if I have any rights as a renter to actually appeal this decision? Any ideas will be welcomed! :) Please keep every rude comments to yourself. I am not asking for an opinion about my previous, stupid actions. Thanks!

Resolved Question: HELP!!! Waiting for full confirmation ... Charity?

I recently made a donation of £50 to islamic relief. On my first attempt i got to the part where i put in my banking details and it said processed, the next step was to finalize or confirm the pledge, but when i tried to click to do it, it said "Details being processed" or something similar to those lines, but it looked more like an mistake message to me or some nice of glitch. I then closed the page without completing the final stage. I went back to it later on and fully completed the transaction. But i still haven't received any confirmation via email from them, what should i do ? have i made two transactions? have i made an accidental illegitimate pledge ? 10 POINTSS !!!

Open Question: Do you play music? How about being part of the "A Tune For Charity" Campaign?

This Youtube Channel was created so that anyone could have their music videos put on (every credit going the them). And if this channel gets enough views, then it will become a partner channel, and every money raised will go to charity. Qualifying Process for Entrants: 1) The video you make MUST be a music video of some nice. You can record yourself playing an instrument (it doesn't matter of your skill), or you can use someone's track (say for instance, "Like It Like That" by Guy Sebastian) and make a video with that (but every credit must go to the artist of that tune). 2) When you send your video in, you MUST include: - The name of your video, - A description of your video, and - Your name, code name, initials, etc. 3) Your music video MUST NOT contain anything that is or can be offensive. 4) Your music video was made by you, so therefore, every credit will be given to you only. We do not take credit for any of these videos, except the "A Tune For Charity" promotional video. Please note: If this channel does become a partner channel, every money raised from the video views WILL go to a charity of the month, which can be decided by those running the "A Tune For Charity" Campaign, or the majority vote by the viewers. Resolved Question: Why is it that liberals are always touting how they "Care about their fellow human beings"?

Resolved Question: Why do the Liberals hate the poor so much and want to cut all their funding off?

Its every I hear lets tax the wealthy man he doesn't deserve it. Screw the wealthy man! The wealthy man as you hold in such contempt employs most of you and gives the most money and help to the worlds needy. The wealthy man will eliminate charity from his budget if taxed heavily. Its just the way it is. Very little tax funding is left for government welfare after it travels through the bureaucracy. Even a liberal can't deny that. So what gives? Haven't most liberals just thought this through or are they just being reactionaries for the cause. This demand to tax the wealthy man will do far greater hurt to the needy than any other policy. I think before the government can tax us anymore they need to clip the pork then we can talk. In my 50 years I have yet to look any pork clip. The pigs just keep getting fatter. Lib Reality is biased: You are a politician asking for only 3% more of my wealth? A wealthy man would never ask to be taxed some more. Its not humanly possible. So now who is FOS? You make me giggle in amazement. Andrew gets it folks. Yes Amelia I feel ya. Peaco:Wow right on man. Not sure what that has to do with the price of tea in China but power to the people man.

Open Question: Which Charity should I pick?

For my leadership class we as a team are suppose to pick a charity and then every that years worth of money goes to it. We want to do something involving animals and it has to be local, so we have narrowed it down to two. The first is called SPCA and the second H.A.R.T (Humane Animal Rescue Team). If you could help out that would be great!

Resolved Question: I think God might be doing a new thing for me but not sure?

I used to be able to look God's face whenever I wanted to... (This happened for about 7 years) and then I rebelled against him and for 5 years I was not able to look God's face... Nobody at church knows about my condition because if they did I would probably be an outcast there. The thing is God gives me his glory, his power and his enlightenment and he also gives me his spirit, his intelligence and his wisdom... so that I seem or appear to be more mature than others even though I don't look God's face... Now here is the thing: Lately in the last 3 days or so... I've been feeling this deep surrender in my soul... it's the same sensation that you receive when you are sniffing metal... (It feels like I am sniffing metal) so I don't know if I'm sniffing the frame of my glasses or if God is slowly revealing his face to me again. Today I asked for people at church to pray that God would forgive me and when they prayed that prayer... I felt a deep sense of reverence, and a vague sense of humiliation... So I wander if God is revealing his face me to again? I know every things are possible with God however I believe that every things are possible with God WHEN you are seeking God's face... There is an extremely religious guy at the charity organization that I attend who makes 500 000 dollars a year... and well I got the impression recently (through a dream) that it was God's will for us to date... or that this was the man God had chosen for me but I believed that was close impossible, since I am obese, uneducated and can't hold down a job... But now that God is slowly revealing his face to me, I think this will change.
